We extend sympathy to Members of the Order s Canterbury Commandery and to the Commander in particular. The article on the Christchurch earthquake and its aftermath describes how aid was forthcoming both from within New Zealand and internationally. In this publication we report on the tangible expressions of support provided by the Order of St. ![]() The tragedy of the Pike River Mine brought a focus of world attention to New Zealand and outpourings of sympathy and help came from many parts of the globe. We are fortunate in that this is a rare event but as is often the case, the situation brings out the very best in humanity. ![]() In recent months this country has experienced disaster on a world scale. Some of the specific articles and items are referred to below, but because our activities are quite widespread, nationally and internationally. ![]() It is also our hope that readers who are not Members may gain an insight into the operations and functions of the Order. We show some of the activities undertaken in the past twelve months, and have attempted to give an indication of some of the Order s aims and aspirations. This Yearbook is intended to give an overview of the Order in New Zealand. The Order was founded as a medieval Order of Chivalry, and our hospitaller role has seen us offering aid to the sick and suffering, relief to those adversely affected by disaster and serving in any possible way to the benefit of society. We interact with New Zealand society at many levels, serving our stated purpose of helping all who are in need, and playing many positive and useful roles. Although the Order of St Lazarus is far from being in any sense a secret society, we do not have a high public profile.
